“Hello, my name is Andrei Cioara and I study Computer Science at Imperial College London”. Or at least that’s how I introduce myself to all the job interviewers. [More about this in future posts].

I am coming to medium.com, after writing some posts on Quora, and few articles on Leetcode, feeling like it’s about time to take the next step. Over the next couple of weeks / months / years, I will share insights about the life of a Student Software Developer.

Some of the topics you will find here if you visit again will be:
- Programming for Ninjas and Beginners
- Job opportunities for Computer Scientists
- Life at Imperial College London
- Self improvement
- How to get a job

Make sure you subscribe / follow / love. There is also that box at the bottom right, which you can use to share.

“Hello, my name is Andrei Cioara and I started programming when I was 9”. Or at least that’s what I tell people who ask me what do I do for a living. [More about this in future posts].

I unofficially started this blog a couple of weeks ago, but I had to do some research before becoming public.

As a platform, I chose medium.com. It is minimalist, mobile friendly, and has an option to download all my stories, in case I want to grab my stuff and leave. Most importantly, I can add my domanin name for free (that’s why you see https://andreicioara.com up there). It’s also the new hipster thing and has the option to add code snippets.

Next, I needed a registrar for the domain. I was familiar with name.com which I used for my other website http://andrei.cioara.me. However, namecheap.com proved to be 50% cheaper as its WHOIS protection fee was close to zero. It was also recommended by Medium and (as I discovered) has a nicer user interface compared to name.com.

Next, I needed a picture. I read somewhere that I should have 1 picture for every 300 words I write. Since I don’t have the time to take my own shots, I will use stock photos for now, following the websites recommended by Tomas Laurinavicius here. The advantage is that they are really good quality, and they are free, no credit required. The disadvantage is that many people use the same image, so one might see my cover picture in some other blogs.

Lastly, I needed to finish one article, which was pretty much the show stopper all these years. Blogging for me is a side project. Whenever I have an idea, I write about it. But writing is draining and after 15–30 minutes I am tired already. Next time I start blogging I am excited about something else, and this goes on. I had to focus.

Why don’t you start a blog? I was curious about this, so I created a poll and left it on Facebook for a couple of hours. The response sample is really small and biased, but the ideas are interesting. One thing I must say is that people had the option to write their “New Answer”, which could be then seen and voted by anyone.

Results for the Facebook poll

I will not do a full analysis of the results, I leave it to the reader to draw their own conclusions. However, some things I want to point out:

  • Internet has trolls
  • Almost no one thinks that writing is boring, whether they are good at it or not
  • At the beginning, most people voted for “It is not my priority now”. However, at some point option “I have no reason to” was added, which received all future votes. I can’t argue on that yet, but this article is pretty interesting

“Hello, my name is Andrei Cioara and I can hack the system”. Or at least that’s how I introduce myself to people I meet at parties. [More about this in future posts].

Jokes aside, hopefully you’ll enjoy this blog. To find out more about me, check out http://andrei.cioara.me.

Edit: The original title used to be “You won’t believe what Andrei did when he started his new blog” followed by “Did he write about university? Did he lecture about programming? Did he talk about hacking?”. It was an experiment for me, yet many people disliked the clickbait, so changed it to Hello World.

Hey there, Andrei here. If you enjoyed the article and want to make sure you know about my next one, you can sign up with your email address above. I only send blog-related updates and have a zero-spam policy.
